Portraits

I enjoy taking portraits. It is probably my favorite thing to do. Every now and then, I stand somewhere with my camera in some corner in the city and start asking people if I can take a portrait of them. Most people, believe it or not, say yes. Like this guy in the picture. He was from Russia and had a heavy accent. As I create a portrait, I often ask myself questions about my subject such as: where is this person from? What does he do for a living? What was going on in his life when I took the picture? How old is he? And then, inevitably, I create a whole character based on my own interpretation of how I see this person in the world.

Yo disfruto hacer retratos. Probablemente es lo que más prefiero hacer. De vez en cuando, me paro con mi camara en alguna esquina de la ciudad y le pregunto al que pasa si puedo fotografiarlo. La mayoría, aunque difícil de creer, dice que sí. Como este señor en la foto, que era de Rusia y tenia un acento muy fuerte. Cuando creo retratos, usualmente me pregunto a mi mismo cosas como por ejemplo: ¿De dónde es esta persona? ¿Cómo se gana la vida? ¿Por qué problemas estará pasando ahora? ¿Qué edad tiene? Y de esta manera, inevitablemente, creo un personaje basado en mi propia interpretación sobre como yo veo a esta persona en el mundo.
